UN Chief Urges Action to Combat Racial Discrimination
“The world must confront the enduring consequences of slavery, colonialism, and racial discrimination through concrete measures to deliver reparatory justice grounded in international human rights law,” Guterres said.
Speaking at a high-level UN meeting marking the 25th anniversary of the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action, Guterres said racial discrimination continues to appear in various forms, including social inequalities, discriminatory legislation and institutions, as well as restrictions on rights and equal opportunities.
He also warned that digital technologies are contributing to the spread of hate speech and disinformation, reinforcing “lies and harmful stereotypes” and contributing to violence and abuse.
“The antidote to these poisons is unity and tangible action,” he said.
Guterres called on governments to strengthen and enforce laws against discrimination, dismantle systemic forms of inequality and invest in more inclusive societies.
He also urged technology companies to detect and tackle bias in artificial intelligence systems while ensuring that digital technologies support equality and inclusion.
