Strengthening Preparedness in Coastal Communities Against the Risk of Tsunamis: The IOC of UNESCO working along communities to build safer and more resilient communities
During the workshop, participants learned about and worked with tools and indicators that make it possible for communities to assess, prepare, and respond to tsunamis. Among other things, these indicators help determine vulnerable areas, identify and quantify at-risk population, identify resources available to implement preparedness measures, develop easily understood evacuation maps, carry out outreach, awareness-raising, and educational activities, and ensure that there is a local response plan and redundant mechanisms to receive and disseminate tsunami alerts to the population. In this way, Tsunami Ready goes beyond simply awarding recognition; it provides a framework for communities to identify gaps, strengthen their capacities, and continuously improve their preparedness and response mechanisms.
Tsunami preparedness requires close cooperation among scientific institutions, national and local authorities, and communities as well as international coordination and cooperation. The workshop was co-organized by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the NOAA International Tsunami Information Centre (ITIC), the Ecuador Naval Oceanographic and Antarctic Institute (INOCAR), the Permanent Commission for the South Pacific (CPPS), and the Ecuador National Secretariat for Risk Management, together with UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission. Trainers included experts from these organizations as well as other international and Ecuadorian tsunami experts.
