UN Chief Urges End to Escalating Attacks in Ukraine, Russia
Guterres said he was "alarmed by the scale of escalating daily attacks on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities" by Russian armed forces, which are "causing a record number of civilian casualties."
He also voiced concern over the increasing number of civilians being killed and injured as Ukrainian forces carry out attacks inside the Russian Federation, including Moscow.
The UN chief "strongly condemns all attacks targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure, wherever they occur, and urges an immediate end to this dangerous escalatory spiral," according to the statement.
Guterres called for renewed diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions and create the conditions for an immediate, full and unconditional ceasefire. He described such a truce as the initial step toward achieving a just, comprehensive and lasting peace in Ukraine.
He stressed that any future settlement must be "in line with international law, including the UN Charter and relevant UN resolutions."
"The United Nations stands ready to support all meaningful efforts to that end," the statement added.
