UN Security Council Denounces Death of Serbian Peacekeeper in Lebanon

(MENAFN) The UN Security Council on Friday strongly denounced the death of a Serbian peacekeeper serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). The peacekeeper lost his life after mortar rounds hit his post on June 4, while two additional peacekeepers sustained injuries during the attack.

"The members of the Security Council condemned the killing of a Serbian peacekeeper from the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) on 4 June," the council said in a press statement.

The council extended its heartfelt sympathies to the relatives of the victims and expressed solidarity with Serbia. It also conveyed hopes for the swift rehabilitation of those wounded. Furthermore, the council honored the commitment and service of all UN peacekeepers and acknowledged the contributions of nations providing troops to UNIFIL.

According to the statement, seven UNIFIL peacekeepers have lost their lives in southern Lebanon since hostilities intensified on March 2.

"These deaths represent the most tragic instances in a series of incidents that reflect a pattern of intimidation, endangerment, and attempts to undermine the mandated activities of UN peacekeepers in Southern Lebanon," it said.

The council reiterated its unwavering backing for UNIFIL and called upon all sides to uphold the safety, protection, and operational freedom of the mission, "in a manner consistent with international law."
