UN Chief Voices Concerns Over Cuba's Fuel Crisis
UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric told reporters at a press conference: "The Secretary-General has been following the situation in Cuba extremely closely, and I can tell you that he's very concerned about the situation in Cuba, which is worsening as oil needs continue to be unmet."
Dujarric invoked the UN General Assembly's repeated demands for an end "to the embargo imposed by the United States on Cuba," adding that Guterres "would like to see all parties pursue dialogue and respect for international law yet again."
On the humanitarian front, Dujarric offered a measure of reassurance: "But our teams on the ground are working with the Government to help support the humanitarian relief for the people of Cuba."
Cuba's energy emergency has sharply deteriorated following Washington's disruption of oil supplies from Venezuela — Havana's longtime ally, which had been shipping tens of thousands of barrels to the island daily. The flow collapsed after a US operation resulted in the capture of former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and the seizure of oil tankers, effectively severing a critical lifeline to the fuel-starved nation.
The crisis shows no immediate signs of easing, with humanitarian conditions on the island continuing to deteriorate.
